Even the smallest space can be transformed into a beautiful vertical garden
We are excited to present one of our most recent residential living wall projects. Our client’s vision involved the creation of a living wall to replace a glass wall on a roof terrace, that would not only serve as a privacy screen, and aesthetic enhancement but also contribute to the environment by attracting wildlife and promoting biodiversity.
To ensure that the living wall becomes the focal point of the space, we opted for a simple yet vibrant design that captures the eye. By carefully selecting over 500 evergreen and perennial plants with diverse textures and forms, we have ensured that the wall remains visually appealing throughout the year.
Our plant selection includes Lavandula angustifolia, Pachysandra terminalis, Convolvulus cneorum, and Erysimum Bowles Mauve, which not only add aesthetic value but also play a crucial role in creating pollinator-friendly gardens. These plants attract bees and other beneficial insects, thereby contributing to the ecological balance and supporting local ecosystems.
This project combines aesthetics, sustainability, and functionality. Living walls not only enhance the beauty of a space but also provide numerous benefits, such as improved air quality, temperature regulation, and a sense of tranquillity.
The magic of living green walls lies in their remarkable flexibility. Whether you're cultivating a pocket-sized balcony oasis or a larger rooftop masterpiece, these vertical gardens adapt effortlessly. Their lush embrace can transform a mundane corner into a botanical haven, filling even the tiniest spaces with life, colour, and rejuvenation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the process involved in living wall installation?
Living wall installation involves several key steps. We start by evaluating your space, analysing sunlight, wind, and the environment. Our team then constructs a sturdy framework, capable of supporting plants, soil, and water. We tailor our plant selection to your location's light conditions, ensuring they thrive. With careful planting and soil choice, we position the plants onto the framework securely. An integrated irrigation system is often incorporated, ensuring consistent watering.
How to choose the right locations and plants for a living wall?
Selecting the right location is vital for a successful living wall. It should receive adequate sunlight or filtered light, depending on the chosen plant varieties. The available space's dimensions and structural strength must also be considered. When choosing plants, we opt for varieties that can thrive vertically and tolerate the light conditions of the chosen location. Low-maintenance, hardy plants are often preferred for their ability to withstand the challenges of vertical growth.
Can you integrate an irrigation system?
Absolutely. Depending on the size of the Living Wall, we prioritise the integration of irrigation systems. These systems distribute water evenly across the wall, promoting consistent plant growth. Drip irrigation or modular panels with built-in water channels are commonly used methods. Our commitment to maintenance extends to the irrigation system, with regular checks to prevent any clogs or malfunctions.
How is the maintenance of a living wall different from traditional gardens?
Maintaining a living wall is distinct from tending to traditional gardens due to its vertical nature. Traditional gardens have plants growing horizontally in the soil, making watering and care relatively straightforward. In contrast, living walls require specialised attention. Monitoring the water levels, nutrients, and potential pests becomes crucial. Pruning and trimming are more strategic as plants grow vertically, ensuring proper coverage and preventing overgrowth. Additionally, regular checks on the wall's structure and irrigation system are necessary to maintain its health and longevity.
