The Shard's Green Oasis Room
In the bustling heart of London, on the 12th floor of the iconic Shard building, lies a serene and rejuvenating retreat: The Shard's Green Oasis Room. This office greening project aimed to design a unique "garden room" that would serve as an escape from the demands of the corporate environment. By incorporating biophilic design principles, nature-inspired elements, and an array of indoor plants, the Green Oasis Room became a haven of tranquillity with a breathtaking view of the Thames.
Creating the Perfect Escape
The project brief called for a space that would provide respite from the rest of the office, offering a sense of calm and connection to nature. To fulfil this vision, a bespoke trellis system was designed to cover the back wall and ceiling of the room. This system allowed for the installation of artificial plants that elegantly trailed from above, eliminating the need for irrigation while maintaining the desired greenery.
The Beauty of Greenery
Key to the success of the Green Oasis Room was the careful selection of plant varieties. Living Ivy plants and Jasmine were chosen to trail up the back wall trellis, creating a subtle screening effect on the glass partitioning. The lush foliage not only added privacy but also contributed to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. In addition to the natural plants, cracked fibre optic lighting was strategically placed to enhance the ethereal effect of the overhanging greenery, casting a gentle glow throughout the room.
The Transformative Power of Biophilic Design
The Shard's Green Oasis Room stands as a testament to the transformative power of biophilic design in office spaces. By integrating natural elements and incorporating sustainable practices, the room became a sanctuary that nurtures well-being and enhances productivity. The carefully designed trellis system, combined with the choice of indoor plants, created a soothing environment that fosters a deep connection with nature, promoting a sense of calm and restoration.
The Collaborative Effort
Turning the vision of the Green Oasis Room into a reality required the expertise of Woodall's Design and Build for the installation and Meristem for the design. Our combined skills and knowledge in the field of office greening and biophilic design ensured a seamless execution and a stunning end result.
In conclusion, The Shard's Green Oasis Room serves as a remarkable example of how office greening and biophilic design can transform a workspace into a productive, sustainable, and visually stunning environment. By embracing nature-inspired elements, carefully selecting indoor plants, and utilising innovative design techniques, this botanical haven offers a respite from the demands of the corporate world, fostering a sense of well-being and connection with the natural world.
