On behalf of the London Borough of Lambeth, we embarked on a mission to design, construct, and install over 520 meters of 1.8m tall Hedera screens at 16 schools within 4 months, targeting pollution-affected areas. Our comprehensive approach included initial surveys, bespoke design, construction, and a 12-month maintenance plan, alongside essential training and handover for school staff, to protect students from air pollution and enhance environmental education.
The Benefits of Green Screens in Urban Design
Meristem Design partnered with the London Borough of Hillingdon to tackle the visual clutter posed by electrical cabinets in a local shopping precinct. The clever solution? Bespoke, powder-coated steel planters adorned with robust Hedera Helix Ivy forming aesthetic green screens. This initiative not only veiled the unsightly cabinets, but also enriched the locale with a dash of nature.
SuDS Planters: London's Residential Flood Solution
Addressing London's Vulnerability to Flooding and SuDS Planters as a Solution:
London, with its vast urban landscape, rich history, and the serpentine River Thames coursing through its heart, faces unique challenges regarding flood risks. Several areas in London are particularly vulnerable to flooding.
SuDS planters are not only designed to manage stormwater and reduce flood risks but also bring in greenery, enhancing the city’s aesthetics and biodiversity. In residential areas, they serve as mini-reservoirs, absorbing excess rainwater and slowly releasing it back, preventing sudden strain on the drainage systems. By integrating them into urban landscapes, we don't just address flooding; we also embrace biophilic design principles

Bath Sensory Garden: A splash of colour for Twerton!
Meristem Design have recently completed another project in the Bath area. This time, the installations were focused in Tweton, a smaller, residential area just outside of Bath City Centre. We also installed Planters with graphics on to support the parking of both regular and cargo bikes for visitors to the area. These planters were planted up by a local community group that engaged in the project from the beginning and will look after and maintain the plants and planters going forward.
Meristem Design helped to turn parking bays into a green oasis in Ashford Town centre
Following successful schemes in Kent, Meristem Design were appointed by Ashford Council to design and install a seating area to bring life to the town centre. This temporary pilot scheme delivers some interventions that link to key themes from the Town Centre Reset – integrated play, feature lighting, temporary public realm and outdoor seating. If successful this could lead to further, more permanent features in the future.
