Meristem Design further established our status as the leading designer and constructor of Parklets in the UK by installing Europe’s largest Parklet in Perth, Scotland, and beginning the role out of a series of six Parklets in Islington!
Firstly, let us congratulate Perth for installing what we believe is Europe if not the world’s largest Parklet - measuring in at a massive 25m long by 3m wide!
As if its size didn’t make it conspicuous enough, Perth and Kinross Council also opted for some eye-catching bold colours to really brighten up the town centre. Housing almost 500 plants and trees, it will provide a real focal point for the town centre - encouraging locals and tourists alike to visit the brilliant concert hall.
In the same week, we completed the installation of the first Parklet by St Luke’s Community Centre, for an ambitious project by Islington council to roll out five on street Parklets in the next few months. Along with our previously installed Archway Parklet, this will make a grand total of six in the borough - taking Islington Council to the top of the Parklet league!
Councillor Claudia Webbe, Islington Council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “We’re working hard to encourage walking and cycling in Islington, and to change streets so they work better for pedestrians and cyclists.
“This parklet offers a little oasis in the city. Shrubs and trees make the street more pleasant and greener – and somewhere where people can sit for a moment, or park their bike whilst resting.
“This is the first of five parklets for Islington, which will help to encourage walking and cycling instead of driving, and help to improve air quality. We look forward to bringing more parklets to Islington later this summer.”
There was a festival atmosphere at the opening as St Lukes Community Centre organised a garden party for the event, providing food and drinks, as well as live music from both a Brazilian Samba band and St Luke's Choir Singers. The partklet was part funded by Old St District Business Improvement District.
The fun doesn’t stop here either, we have upcoming parklets in London Boroughs of Westiminster, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and Waltham Forest - so keep your eyes peeled for the Meristem Team around London this summer!
