Transforming Urban Spaces: Lancaster West Community Parklet
In the heart of London's North Kensington area, Meristem Design undertook an ambitious project to create a vibrant and inviting outdoor space for the Lancaster West community. The Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team (LWNT) is a local community organisation in the North Kensington area of London. They work to improve the quality of life for residents in the Lancaster West Estate. Their responsibilities include community engagement, housing and estate management and community development projects.
LWNT secured funding from the Future Neighbourhood Fund to commission a parklet for the Treadgold residents directly outside Kensington Leisure Centre. The Future Neighbourhood Fund is a funding program that supports community development and improvement projects in various neighbourhoods. We were fortunate enough to be selected to deliver the parklet.
Designing for Maximum Greening and Connection with Nature
The main driving force behind the design was maximum greening, achieved by an abundance of planters and incorporating a living roof structure. The main benefits behind this are improved air quality, increased biodiversity and a relaxing visual appeal. This also gives residents in a built-up area a connection with nature.
To ensure a seamless blend with the community, we utilised the branding colours of the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team (LWNT), creating a cohesive identity for the parklet. Timber cladding on the majority of the planters added warmth and texture, complementing the vibrant greenery. This attention to detail resulted in an aesthetically pleasing outdoor space that residents easily identify as an integral part of their community.
