Rolling out Rain Gardens using Sustainable Drainage System

We are rolling out a series of Rain Gardens across Merton with the first one completed in Wimbledon using the Sustainable Drainage System better known as SuDs.

SuDs modify surface water flow to more natural rates, reducing the impact of urbanisation on flooding at source by allowing vegetation and plants to absorb the majority of the rainwater.

Too much surface rainwater in our cities often leads to a rising water table.  This causes our riverbanks to overflow and leads to devastating floods in our countryside and damage to property in the nearby towns.

Much of our green spaces in our urban areas are being built on for housing and the shift by many households over the years to tarmac/concrete over their front lawns for car parking contributes to the excess flood risks.  Global warming will exacerbate the problem with heavy more frequent rain falls in the UK.

Creating Rain Gardens across our cities using SuDs is one part of the solution to this problem.
