Turning the Grey Green

As part of the £6.87m redevelopment by Oxford City Council, Meristem Design have designed and installed bespoke planters, benches with planting and a deckless parklet area. Delivering street furniture not only provides a space for people to enjoy and relax but also encourages them to spend longer in the area, helping to increase visitors and support local businesses.

Previously a grey underused part of the city, Market Street has been revitalised to support the Covered Market’s daily activities and to give the area an overall green uplift.

Designs to improve the space

Funded by Oxford City Council and in collaboration with Urban Movement, Meristem provided planting, trees, outdoor dining space and community seating to utilise the existing space and enhance the urban public realm.

The revitalised communal space is now far more pedestrian and cycle friendly and will be used as both a public square and flexible event space, creating a vibrant and more welcoming area in the bustling city centre.

The Power of Biophilia in urban spaces

Biophilic design, which aims to integrate nature into our built environments, is a key element in revitalising grey or underused spaces, especially through benefitting local businesses, residents and visitors.

Embedding green infrastructure, seating, cycle planting and community dining not only supports the attractiveness of the city centre and Covered Market, but helps protects the city environmentally and improves people’s quality of life - which is what our public spaces need to deliver.”
