John Keble Primary School
Meristem Design were awarded the contract to design and install a nature playground in an unloved tarmac space at John Keble Primary in Brent.
The design seeks to offer children, of all ages, a connection with nature which is ever more important following a difficult period for school children. The school’s new facility includes a nature pond with native planting and dipping stations, over 35 square metres of wildflower turf, a sensory wall with climbers such as Jasmine, honeysuckle and clematis, a hazel tunnel, a climb through feature, teepees and willow screening, native trees and over 60 plants. Bird box cameras offer students a learning opportunity with the scope for students to stay connected via a live feed to the school website. A bat box has also been installed in the existing horse chestnut tree.
The playground is ready for the return to school following the recent lockdowns. It provides an outdoor learning space and a place for students to be creative and to learn about nature at a time where so many students throughout the UK have been disadvantaged.
The school engaged the community via localised social media platforms to spread awareness of the project and also attracted some plant donations from generous members of the public.
in 2020 we also installed more than 80 linear meters of pollution busting green screens at this school along the A404.
