With the autumn planting season drawing to a close, we've worked with the Borough of Waltham Forest to help complete another phase of rain gardens. Consisting of over 110m2 of SuDS, as well as tree pits and planters, we've added further locations to their Coppermill scheme to boost its effectiveness, as well as working on new schemes. The latest is the Leytonstone business low emissions neighbourhood.
"The project aims to reduce exposure to road transport generated pollutants and improve overall air quality through a range of active and sustainable travel infrastructure improvements, traffic management measures that prioritise low and zero emissions transport options, behaviour change initiatives, and increased green infrastructure." - https://enjoywalthamforest.co.uk/blen/
The BLEN scheme incorporates a range of trees, as well as native hedging shrubs, grasses, edibles and flowering species. Geraniums, Asters and Salad Burnets will provide food for pollinators, with species such as Sage and Rosemary, planted to encourage neighbourhood interactions and residential involvement.
For the first time in Waltham Forest, we've also helped to complete a scheme that saw a temporary LTN location converted into permanent rain gardens. The 4 planters have now been replaced with 28m2 of sustainable drainage, bursting with a variety of plant species to soak up the rain and clean the air.
We're excited to see this happening and look forward to working with both the borough of Waltham Forest and other boroughs across London on similar projects next year.
