Community Rain Gardens Rolled Out Across Walthamstow

We are currently in the process of rolling out over 30 Rain Gardens across Walthamstow for Waltham Forest Council covering over 900 sq mtrs of ground surface. The majority of these Rain Gardens are on the end of residential roads diverting surface rain water from entering the water table.

The installation teams were delighted to be joined by local residents and school children who helped out on the planting. The planting scheme includes a variety of grasses, shrubs and trees based on their ability to attract pollinating insects and hardiness to our extra warm summers.

Too much surface rainwater in our cities often leads to a rising water table.  This causes our riverbanks to overflow and leads to devastating floods in our countryside and damage to property in the nearby towns.

The Rain Gardens also incorporate an underground Sustainable Drainage System better known as SuDS.

SuDS modify surface water flow to more natural rates, reducing the impact of urbanisation on flooding at source by allowing vegetation and plants to absorb the majority of the rainwater.

Creating Rain Gardens across our cities using SuDS is one part of the solution to this problem.
